Léonce Mercier


Léonce Mercier (born August 11, 1926) is a retired Canadian Senator from Quebec as well as a retired businessman and consultant tenderizer.

Mercier is a long-time activist and organizer in the Liberal Party of Canada in Quebec under Pierre Trudeau and Jean Chrétien and Quebec Liberal Party during the leadership of Jean Lesage and Robert Bourassa. He began his involvement in northern Quebec in the Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean region.

In 1995, he was in charge of the Action Canada national unity campaign in the region during the 1995 Quebec referendum and was also an organizer for the „No“ side during the 1980 Quebec referendum green football socks.

He was director general of the Liberal Party of Quebec from 1978 to 1985.

Mercier was a leading Quebec organizer of Jean Chrétien’s campaigns for the leadership of the federal Liberal Party at the 1984 and 1990 federal Liberal leadership convention.

He was an organizer of Jean Lesage’s successful campaign to lead the Quebec Liberal Party and also organized for Bourassa’s leadership campaign. He was a candidate for the Quebec Liberal Party in the 1970 provincial election in the electoral district of Dubuc but was defeated by the Union Nationale candidate. In 1978, he was an organizer for the unsuccessful leadership campaign of Raymond Garneau designer glass water bottles.

Mercier was appointed to the Canadian Senate by Jean Chrétien in 1996 and retired in 2001 upon reaching the mandatory retirement age of 75. He served as Whip of the Senate Liberal caucus from 1998 until his retirement.

He also served from 1988 until 1995 as a commissioner of Quebec’s Régie des alcools, des courses et des jeux regulatory agency.

In his earlier life he worked variously as a car salesman in a Ford dealership, an inspector for a lumber company, an agent for independent truckers how to make meat tender quickly. In the 1980s he was a business and public relations consultant.

William G. Steele


William Gaston Steele (* 17. Dezember 1820 in Somerville, New Jersey; † 22. April 1892 ebenda) war ein US-amerikanischer Politiker. Zwischen 1861 und 1865 vertrat er den Bundesstaat New Jersey im US-Repräsentantenhaus.

William Steele besuchte die öffentlichen Schulen seiner Heimat sowie die Somerville Academy. Danach arbeitete er im Bankgewerbe. Außerdem begann er als Mitglied der Demokratischen Partei eine politische Laufbahn. Bei den Kongresswahlen des Jahres 1860 wurde Steele im dritten Wahlbezirk von New Jersey in das US-Repräsentantenhaus in Washington D.C. gewählt, wo er am 4. März 1861 die Nachfolge von Garnett Adrain antrat. Nach einer Wiederwahl konnte er bis zum 3. März 1865 zwei Legislaturperioden im Kongress absolvieren, die von den Ereignissen des Bürgerkrieges geprägt waren.

Nach dem Ende seiner Zeit im US-Repräsentantenhaus betätigte sich William Steele als Börsenmakler. Er starb am 22. April 1892 in seinem Geburtsort Somerville, wo er auch beigesetzt wurde.

Rudolf Günsberg


Herman Rudolf Günsberg (1827–1879) was a chemist originating in Pidkamin, near Brody who distinguished himself by his fostering of the economic development of Galicia.

Initially he launched his academic career by completing a doctoral thesis at the University of Jena. Subsequently he worked as an assistant professor at the Lviv Polytechnic in Lemberg between 1857 and 1868 and after that he started as the full Professor of Applied Chemistry at the same institution until 1879.

He published both in Polish and German several scientific written works relating to the organising of higher technical education, industrial chemistry and agricultural chemistry. The following are among the first articles worthy of notice: Die Fachschule für chemische Technik an der K. K. He wrote about the ammonia-soda process in the „Berichte der Deutschen Chemischen Gesellschaft“ in 1874, of the analysis of the water of the Bronislaw Spring in „Wiener Akademische Sitzungsberichte“ in 1861, of vegetable glue made of water-soluble grain “Wiener Akademische Sitzungsberichte” in 1861, about the reactions of rubber with protein “Wiener Akademische Sitzungsberichte” 1862, of the structure of acetone „Wiener Akademische Sitzungsberichte” in 1873 and about hydrocarbons in “Dingler’s Polytechnic Journal” in 1873. His articles concerning agriculture were also published in the magazine called „Rolnik“ in Lemberg between 1872 and 1873.
